Reproductive Health in Somaliland

Reproductive health is a key aspect of overall health and well-being, focusing on the physical,
mental, and social well-being related to the reproductive system at all life stages. Improving
reproductive health services is essential to reducing maternal and newborn mortality and
enhancing the quality of life for women and families.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Maternal Health: Ensuring access to skilled birth attendants, antenatal/postnatal care,
    and emergency obstetric services.
  • Family Planning: Providing education and access to contraceptives for safe pregnancy
    planning and spacing.
  • Sexual Health: Promoting safe sexual practices and preventing sexually transmitted
    infections (STIs).
  • Adolescent Health: Addressing reproductive health needs through education and youth-
    friendly services.
  • Capacity Building: Training healthcare providers, including midwives and nurses, to
    deliver quality reproductive health services.

 

SLNMA’s Role:

  • Collaborated to establish a Master’s Program in Reproductive Health at the University of
    Hargeisa.
  • Supports midwifery schools and healthcare facilities in delivering reproductive health
    services.
  • Advocates for policies improving reproductive health access and quality.

 

Goals:

  • Improve maternal and newborn survival rates.
  • Expand access to family planning and reproductive health services.
  • Empower communities with reproductive health knowledge and rights.
